Why Rocky Linux on Host4Fun

Why Choose Host4Fun for Rocky Linux VPS Hosting?

The community-built RHEL replacement on the world's fastest VPS hardware. AMD Ryzen, DDR5, NVMe and 10Gbps — built for serious infrastructure.

Built by the original CentOS founder

Rocky Linux was founded by Gregory Kurtzer — the same person who created CentOS in 2004. When Red Hat announced the end of CentOS, Kurtzer created Rocky Linux specifically to continue what CentOS started: a free, community-maintained, RHEL-compatible Linux distribution. This origin gives Rocky Linux unmatched community trust among long-time CentOS administrators.

Peridot — open, verifiable builds

Rocky Linux builds its packages using Peridot, an open-source build system that is publicly visible and auditable by anyone. Every build can be independently verified to confirm it was compiled correctly from RHEL sources without tampering. This level of transparency is unique among RHEL-compatible distributions and matters deeply to security-conscious enterprises.

SELinux enforcing — enterprise security

Rocky Linux ships with SELinux in enforcing mode — mandatory access control that limits what every process can do, even after a compromise. Firewalld provides enterprise firewall management. SCAP profiles are available for CIS and DISA STIG compliance. The same security posture as RHEL, without the subscription cost.

cPanel, Plesk & DirectAdmin ready

All three major hosting control panels officially support Rocky Linux 8 and 9. Deploy cPanel/WHM, Plesk Obsidian or DirectAdmin on your Rocky Linux VPS at Host4Fun in minutes. Rocky Linux is one of the top recommended OS choices for new cPanel installations following CentOS EOL.

35+ global locations

Germany Rocky Linux VPS, Singapore Rocky Linux VPS, New York Rocky Linux VPS, UK Rocky Linux VPS, France Rocky Linux VPS — deploy your infrastructure close to your users. All 35+ Host4Fun locations support Rocky Linux 9, 8, 10 and the latest version, with new nodes regularly added worldwide.

Pay any way, including crypto

Credit card, PayPal, Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT and 50+ cryptocurrencies accepted. Monthly or annual billing available — save 40% on annual plans. No long-term contracts or cancellation fees. Ideal for hosting businesses, agencies and developers managing multiple Rocky Linux VPS deployments.

The Rocky Linux story

Rocky Linux — Born from the community, for the community

In December 2020, Red Hat announced the end of CentOS Linux — the stable, free RHEL-compatible distribution that had powered millions of production servers for nearly two decades. CentOS 8 was cut short just one year into its planned 10-year lifecycle. The announcement triggered a crisis for the global sysadmin community.

Gregory Kurtzer, the person who originally founded CentOS in 2004, responded by creating Rocky Linux within days of the announcement. Named after Rocky McGaugh, an early CentOS co-founder, Rocky Linux was built from the ground up by the community to continue the mission CentOS abandoned: a free, stable, RHEL binary-compatible Linux distribution maintained in the open, with no single corporate entity controlling its future.

Today Rocky Linux is maintained by the Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation (RESF) — a public benefit organisation with no single corporate backer. Rocky Linux 9 is fully supported until May 2032. The Peridot build system makes every package build publicly auditable. It is the choice for sysadmins who want enterprise-grade RHEL compatibility without the subscription cost, and without trusting a single vendor to keep the lights on.

Still running CentOS 7 or CentOS 8?

CentOS 7 went end-of-life in June 2024. CentOS 8 ended in December 2021. Servers still running CentOS in production are exposed to unpatched security vulnerabilities. Rocky Linux's free migrate2rocky script migrates a live CentOS 8 system to Rocky Linux 8 in-place — no full reinstall required. Deploy a fresh Rocky Linux 9 VPS at Host4Fun and migrate your workloads to a platform with support until 2032.

Frequently asked questions

Rocky Linux VPS — your questions answered

Everything about Rocky Linux VPS hosting, CentOS migration, cPanel support, Peridot builds and global locations at Host4Fun.

Rocky Linux VPS hosting is a virtual private server running Rocky Linux — a free, open-source, RHEL binary-compatible Linux distribution created by Gregory Kurtzer, the original founder of CentOS. Host4Fun offers Rocky Linux 9, 8, 10 and Latest from $5/month with AMD Ryzen, DDR5 RAM and NVMe SSD across 35+ global locations. It is ideal for cPanel, Plesk, enterprise applications and anyone migrating from CentOS.
Yes, Rocky Linux was created specifically as a drop-in CentOS replacement by Gregory Kurtzer, who originally founded CentOS. It is 1:1 RHEL binary-compatible, meaning any software that ran on CentOS runs unchanged on Rocky Linux. It is officially supported by cPanel, Plesk and DirectAdmin. Rocky Linux 8 is supported until May 2029 and Rocky Linux 9 until May 2032, giving you a long, stable migration path away from end-of-life CentOS.
Rocky Linux 9 is the recommended choice for all new deployments — it is the current stable release with support until May 2032 and ships with RHEL 9-compatible packages including kernel 5.14, OpenSSL 3.0 and PHP 8.1/8.2 via AppStream. Rocky Linux 8 is the ideal choice for applications originally built for CentOS 8 or RHEL 8, with support until May 2029. Rocky Linux 10 is available for the newest RHEL 10-compatible workloads.
Yes. Rocky Linux is officially supported by cPanel/WHM, Plesk Obsidian and DirectAdmin. Rocky Linux 8 and 9 are recommended OS choices for new cPanel installations following CentOS EOL. You can install cPanel on a Rocky Linux 9 VPS at Host4Fun with a single curl command. The Nova plan (4 vCPU, 4 GB RAM) is the recommended starting point for production cPanel and Plesk deployments.
Both Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux are free, RHEL binary-compatible CentOS replacements with identical support windows (May 2029 for v8, May 2032 for v9). The main differences are governance and tooling. Rocky Linux is maintained by the Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation, a community-led foundation with no single corporate backer, and uses the open-source Peridot build system for publicly auditable, verifiable builds. AlmaLinux is backed by CloudLinux and offers the ELevate in-place migration tool for upgrading CentOS 7 systems. Both are excellent — Rocky Linux is often favoured by teams that prioritise community governance and build transparency.
Peridot is Rocky Linux's open-source build system that is fully public and auditable by anyone on the internet. Unlike most Linux distributions, Peridot lets the entire community verify that Rocky Linux packages were built correctly from RHEL upstream sources and have not been modified or tampered with. This level of transparency is unique among RHEL-compatible distributions and is particularly valued by security-conscious enterprises and government deployments.
Yes. Rocky Linux ships with SELinux in enforcing mode by default, providing mandatory access control that limits what every running process can do — even in the event of a compromise. Firewalld handles enterprise firewall management. SCAP security profiles are available for CIS benchmark and DISA STIG compliance. The Rocky Linux security team issues rapid patches aligned with RHEL security advisories, keeping your server protected with minimal delay.
Yes. All Host4Fun VPS plans run on KVM hypervisors, which support full hardware virtualisation and allow custom OS deployments. Contact Host4Fun support to request older Rocky Linux versions, AlmaLinux, Fedora, Arch Linux, a custom hardened image or to bring your own ISO. Any x86-64 Linux distribution is compatible with our KVM infrastructure.

Yes. Every Host4Fun Rocky Linux VPS plan includes full root access. You can install any package via dnf, configure SELinux policies, manage firewalld rules, install cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin or any other software — complete server control with no restrictions on what you can run or configure.
Host4Fun Rocky Linux VPS instances provision automatically within minutes of payment. Select your plan, choose your Rocky Linux version (9, 8, 10 or Latest), pick from 35+ locations, complete your payment and the VPS is live with SSH credentials sent to your email instantly.
